Visit to the Purpurkopf site.
Archaeological excavations carried out since 2022 by Archéologie d'Alsace, with the help of volunteers from the Club Vosgien du Purpurkopf, have uncovered a castrum dating from the 9th-10th centuries. It has been identified as the residence of the ancestors of Pope Leo IX, which would make it the oldest castle in Alsace.
The fortified building is approximately 19 m long and 12 m wide, with walls approximately 2 m thick and an apparent height of 2 m. The original height of the building is estimated to have been between 9 and 10 metres, taking into account the wooden structure and the roof gable.
Crossbow bolts and arrowheads were discovered during excavations, probably attesting to a military function. The building is also surrounded by an enclosure, confirming its defensive nature.
The site was also occupied during the Roman period, but the exact nature of this occupation remains unknown today.
